The ant who finds the closest food source, makes the most frequent number of trips to and from the nest as she has a shorter distance to cover. This refreshes the scent path, and soon other ants leaving the nest pick up on this stronger pheromone scent path - each one reinforcing the scent as they move along the path. Soon, every ant leaving the nest follows this one path, because the scent is continually refreshed and is therefore stronger than all the other random paths where the scent rapidly fades away.

Sharks - Female sharks release pheromones into the water signaling that they are ready to mate. Gangs of males pick up on these pheromones and pursue the female in an effort to mate with her.

Termites - Like ants, termites issue 'follow-me' signals using pheromones. They are known as trail-blazing signals. Termite leaders use them to issue a general broadcast to slave termites to follow foraging trails.
